Prabowo Subianto, in his book “Military Leadership Notes from Experience Chapter I: Exemplary Leaders of The Indonesian Armed Forces,” discusses his encounter with Pak Yogie Suardi Memet, a prominent figure from the ’45 generation. Pak Yogie was described as having a sympathetic face, sharp eyes, confidence, discipline, and proficiency in foreign languages. He was deeply patriotic and emphasized the importance of unconditional love for the homeland.
Upon graduating from commando training at the Special Forces Education and Training Center (PUSDIKLATPASSUS), Prabowo Subianto, then a Second Lieutenant, reported to Brigadier General Yogie Suardi Memet, the KOPASSANDHA Commander. Despite his stature not being very tall, Pak Yogie had an attractive appearance and a well-maintained physical demeanor. He exuded confidence, discipline, and patriotism, typical traits of the ’45 generation who had successfully defended the country against foreign invaders.
Pak Yogie was also noted for his religious devotion and efforts to eliminate unruly behavior within the Red Beret Corps. He set an example by upholding traditional values, such as always respecting one’s parents and maintaining discipline in the face of prevalent drinking culture among soldiers.
A former Battalion Commander of 330 Kujang I Siliwangi, Pak Yogie played a significant role in capturing Kahar Muzakar in South Sulawesi during a DI/TII crackdown operation. Despite not being a graduate of the military academy, he underwent training at the P3AD program in Bandung, alongside other notable alumni such as General L.B. Moerdani and Lieutenant General Dading Kalbuadi.
