Prabowo Subianto, President-elect, emphasized the importance of having incorruptible judges as a key to a corruption-free nation. He made this statement during a phone call with Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, while addressing the Indonesian Judges’ Solidarity group at the DPR building in Jakarta on Tuesday (October 8).
According to Prabowo, judges must be strong and their well-being must be prioritized in order to ensure their independence and effectiveness. He reiterated his commitment to improving the quality of life and financial security of judges, stating that judges’ living standards need to be guaranteed for them to perform their duties effectively.
As Indonesia’s Defense Minister, Prabowo has long advocated for improving the remuneration of judges. The Indonesian Judges Association recently raised concerns about the lack of salary increases over the past 12 years, with newly appointed judges earning a net income of around Rp 12 million, which is deemed insufficient to support their families.
In response, Prabowo has promised positive changes to improve the situation, which has been well-received by judges. They are hopeful for the improvements he has pledged to implement once he assumes office.
