Prabowo Subianto, President-elect for the 2024-2029 term, had a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday (1/5). Justin congratulated Prabowo on his victory in the election and they discussed the future cooperation between Canada and Indonesia.
During the call, Justin expressed his delight at Prabowo’s strong victory, saying, “I am very pleased to congratulate you on your strong victory in the massive election. I am extremely delighted.” Prabowo, in return, appreciated Justin’s congratulations and praised both Justin’s father, Pierre Trudeau, and Justin himself for their leadership.
Prabowo thanked Justin for calling him directly and expressed his admiration for the Trudeaus. He also mentioned his anticipation of working together with Justin in the future.
Both leaders discussed various topics of mutual interest geared towards enhancing the bilateral relations between Canada and Indonesia, especially in terms of their strong economic ties. They reiterated their support for the ongoing negotiations regarding the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and looked forward to the upcoming Canadian Trade Mission to Indonesia later in the year.
Furthermore, they also touched upon Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, exploring opportunities for collaboration in the crucial minerals sector. According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s office, Trudeau aims to bolster the partnership between Canada and Indonesia once President-elect Prabowo Subianto assumes office in October.
