A Vital Support: Istiqlal Grand Imam Stresses Importance of Free Nutritious Meal Policy Based on Prophet’s Teachings

Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque and Rector of the Quranic Sciences University Jakarta, has expressed his full support for President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to provide free nutritious meals for school children. Nasaruddin stressed the significance of ensuring proper nutrition for children, highlighting its basis in Islamic teachings.

“The idea of supplying nutritious meals for young school children is extremely important and deserves our support. There are numerous Hadiths that remind us of the importance of providing adequate nutrition to children, especially during their brain development phase,” Nasaruddin stated to the media.

He mentioned that such a policy should have been executed earlier, but he welcomes its introduction now, emphasizing that it is never too late to start something beneficial.

“I am grateful that this good cause is being pursued now. As the Grand Imam, I frequently emphasize in the media the importance of paying special attention to children, particularly in terms of nutrition,” he added.

Nasaruddin referenced Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam’s emphasis on caring for children, highlighting that the free meal policy is aligned with Islamic teachings.

“Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam placed great importance on children. For example, he advised that children should be taught to pray from the age of seven and disciplined by the age of ten. This underscores the significance of nurturing children’s development in areas such as nutrition, education, and parental care,” Nasaruddin explained.

He also pointed out that this policy could offer a solution for orphaned and neglected children who may lack access to adequate nutrition.

“Once again, the Quran reminds us of the duty to care for orphans. Nasaruddin quoted a verse that calls for special attention to the welfare of orphans,” Nasaruddin said.

Nasaruddin’s endorsement of the free nutritious meal policy reflects its strong connection to Islamic values, focusing on the well-being and comprehensive development of children.
